David Byrne's True Stories
There are not too many films from the 1980s that aren't dated when watched today. Although when David Byrne (ala Talking Heads fame) made his 1986 movie True Stories he wrote, directed, and acted in a timeless reflection on American suburban sprawl.
Featuring performances by John Goodman, Spalding Grey, and the Talking Heads, this movie examines the phenomenon of strip malls, small town pride, and the loss of personal connections at the expense of technology.

Amazon has True Stories for under $10. That's a great deal!
