Exclusive Interview With Broken Social Scenester, Kevin Drew

Broken Social Scene frontman Kevin Drew just finished an American tour in support of his new solo record, Spirit If... Before he came to Philly I contacted his label,Arts and Crafts, to chat with him for the Walrus. Arrangements were made, schedules confirmed, and at 2:30 the day of his show I showed up to introduce myself, only to realize he had no idea why I was there.

Emily: Hi, Kevin?

Kevin: Yeah? Ah man, is this an interview?

Emily: Well, it doesn't have to be. Truly, if you don't want to talk that's fine. I just spoke to your label and they told me to show up at 2:30.

Kevin: That's cool, I just didn't check my email, so I probably knew about this but forgot.

Emily: Are you sure this is ok? I don't want to be a drag.

Kevin: No no, it's ok. Go ahead, whaddaya got?

Emily: Okay so, I'm guessing there has to be something you like to do while on tour to pass time? Canasta? Yahtzee?

Kevin: Drink tequila. It's because of these North American buses. There is no room for anything, you can't really read or have space, and there aren't any stairs, which are crucial for maintaining sanity. All you can really do in a US bus is drink, gain weight, and watch satellite TV. It's like driving around in a coke can-it's so claustrophobic.

Emily: You should get a folding bike, do you have one of those?

Kevin: I did, but I gave it to a friend who also tours. She took it on her bus and used it maybe twice. It's these buses, they just suck the life out of you. It is so hard to want to do anything.

Emily: Okay, completely different question. Do you miss having a day job?

Kevin:I never really had one before this. I just miss having balance, being at home, around friends. Everything is so chaotic, I need to make this a second or third priority in my life to have a healthier lifestyle.

Emily: You've been doing a lot of traveling all over the east coast, and now the leaves are changing. Fall is upon us in full force, do you like this time of year?

Kevin: Yeah, fall is a solid season. Fall and Spring are my favorites- birth and death. It's what it's all about.

Emily: That's all I have! See, that wasn't so bad was it?

Kevin: Not at all. See ya later.

Since the tour is over, check out this video for the party startin' single "Backed Out On The Cause."

Spirit If... is an album you will be happy to own. Pick it up!
