Found Sounds: The Origins of Justice's "Phantom" and Daft Punk's "Superheroes"
Connect the dots, la la la
Let it be known, that I am a history dork. I love knowing where things come from and tracing their lineage to the present time. In regards to music, it is always interesting to know where today's musicians get their samples from.
For example, did you know that the melody from Justice's glitchified "Phantom" was sampled from a song by Italian-Horror movie score-masters, Goblin. Or that Daft Punk's "Superheroes," from their classic 2001 album, Discovery is based around a high-flying Barry Manilow song? (Sampling and adding to the music of their youth was the theme of that Daft Punk album).
I'll admit it, the Barry Manilow track is pretty kick-ass and Goblin's, like all of their music, is wonderfully creepy, though it does sound quaint compared to Justice's. Now if someone would just release a compilation featuring all the songs that were sampled for Paul's Boutique...
Cheers to Chris for the Goblin track and check out more of Daft Punk's origins on the semi-new compilation Discovered.
