Philly Popped! Fest Review + Photos
On Saturday, Robin and I attended the Popped! Fest in West Philly. The oh-so-dreammmyyy indie bill included Dan Deacon, Gogol Bordello, Crystal Castles and others (we only caught a song or two from The Ting Tings and weren't interested in seeing Vampire Weekend or Mates of State). The weather was absolutely perfect for an outdoor fest and the crowd was definitely with it. Check out some reviews and photos from the event:
Dan Deacon
Here's the bottom line: Dan is the fucking man! Even though the coordinators cut his set short (of all the artists they could've chosen!) he still managed to get the crowd engaged and participating in his Zoobly Zoo electronic soundscapes, including a ring-around-the-rosie human multiplication game. It sounded great and the crowd ate it up, especially this guy:
Super-fan sees you! Join him or die!
Gogol Bordello
Oh Gogol Bordello, how we love your gypsy pirate ways. From your tie headbands to your avant-garde punk cacophonies, you really get a rise out of us. Oh and when those two cute Asian women suddenly came out of nowhere and took to the stage in unison, screaming as if they were giving birth...yea we love that kind of shit! We don't quite know what you are, but we know that we want more! Plus, the violinist looks like the coolest dude EVER!
Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles' 8-bit anarchy has always struck me as moody night-time music, so it was a little weird listening to them on a sunny day. In any case, I definitely dug their swagger and their style, but their songs still leave something to be desired.
All and all it was a fun day out, but from what I saw, none of the performances were mind-blowing by any means. It's really a shame that Deacon's set was cut short, since he was easily the most interesting and captivating performer on the bill. C'est la vie!
Big thanks to Robin for taking such awesome photos!
