Visual Notes: Top 5 Typographic Album Covers

Visual Notes: Top 5 Typographic Album Covers

Hello, friends. I have just emerged from a week-long crisis along the lines of, "What is art and why do I make it?"

Lucky for you, instead of a discourse on the contemporary art world this week, I have narrowed the field to typography, the design element nearest and dearest to my heart.

Here I have assembled a wee Top 5 collection of excellent examples of album art that use type as the dominant design element.

I'm ready to talk type to ya, baby...

5. Radiohead - In Rainbows
I THINK IT/S GREAT THAT
A HIGH_PROFILE BAND IS
USIN G SUCH CLEAN/BOLD
TYPO_GRAPHIC CHOICE S/

4. Zombie Nation - Black Toys
A really simple nod to Bauhaus geometric styles. Alternative album title rumored to be Zombie Nation: A Design-Savvy Country of Dead People.

3. Spank Rock - YoYoYoYoYo
YesYesYesYesYes, Spank Rock! Put that descending type-as-texture (!) on me.

2. NO AGE - Nouns
Not only is Nouns my favorite new album, but it's also serving as my current desk ornament!

The NO AGE breakdown:
Nouns: A+
Adjectives: 3D, slinky-esque, impressive
Verbs: Purchase, Listen, Grin

1. YOURCODENAMEIS: MILO - Print Is Dead
AN AWESOME HANDJOB!
Calm down, ya perv, I was talking about the excellent hand-drawn type for a fairly listenable band. Now use your right hand to turn the case over and check out even more excellent type on the flip side

VISUAL NOTES is brought to you by Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction - a clothing company that hires innovative, contemporary artists to design exceptional and wearable pieces that combat the troubling possibility of artwork losing its presence and power in our image-saturated society.
